As we get older, many of us become more vulnerable to illness. To reduce this, we would like to invite you to make an appointment to come into the Glover Street Surgery for a health check. The federal government has recently introduced a new health check. It is for everyone aged between 45 and 49 who may be at risk of developing a health complaint, like diabetes or heart problems.

The aim of the health check is to help find, prevent or lessen the effect of disease. After all, it is better to avoid disease than treat it. This health check will give us the opportunity to look at your lifestyle and medical/family history to find out if you are at risk.

The health check involves:

  • - Updating your medical history and looking at your health issues
  • - Doing tests (such as blood pressure tests), if required
  • - Follow up of any problems identified
  • - Advice and information, for example on how to make lifestyle changes to improve your health

If you are currently within the age of 45 and 49 you may have a “risk factor”. This meaning anything that increases your chance of developing a disease, then you are entitled to a health check.

Risk factors may include:

  • - High blood pressure
  • - Lack of physical activity
  • - Extra weight
  • - Unbalanced diet
  • - High cholesterol
  • - Family history of disease (e.g. cancer, glaucoma, heart disease, depression or diabetes)
  • - Smoking
  • - High stress levels
  • - Sun Exposure

There is no cost for this service as it is covered by Medicare. When booking your appointment, please ensure to let the reception staff know that it is for a 45-49 Year Old Health Check so they can allocate an appropriate time period for the doctor. Also, if you have any friends or family members that would be entitled to such a check, talk to them about it and encourage them to visit their usual doctor.

Child Health is an area of clinical medicine that is of great importance to all the doctors at the Glover Street Surgery.

If you are a parent, you would know that all children are susceptible to a range of illnesses. When it comes to the health of your child, one of the most important things a parent can do is to immunise their child. We offer the full childhood immunisation schedule at the Glover Street Surgery and have a state of the art vaccine fridge. We have a computerised recall system for childhood vaccinations.

At the Glover Street Surgery we treat a broad range of childhood complaints including ear infections, upper respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, viral gastroenteritis, asthma and eczema to name a few. The prompt assessment and treatment of the unwell child is a priority for the practice.

Diabetes Mellitus is a common condition that can affect individuals from early childhood, adolescence and all the way through adult life. At the Glover Street Surgery, the doctors take a particular interest in the diagnosis, assessment & management of both Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic condition in which excellent blood glucose control and paying close attention to treating other risk factors can significantly reduce the risk of long term complications. We work closely with dietician, exercise physiologist and podiatrist to assist with the management of our diabetic patients. Where appropriate we also have local endocrinologists who we consult as part of the management team for our patients with diabetes mellitus.

With the growing obesity rate in Australia, we now have more cases of diabetes as a result. Your eating habits could put you at risk of Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. If you already have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes and are on insulin, you should be carefully monitored . Our staff understand diabetes, can teach you how the food you eat changes your blood glucose level, and how to coordinate your diabetes medications and eating for optimal health.

At the Glover Street Surgery we are very much a family oriented practice. It is not uncommon for us to be looking after three generations of the same family. We cater for those trying to conceive, pregnant women, birth, babies, toddlers’ right through to teenage years as well as all related issues to mums and dads. Men’s and women’s health is also a major concern to us, as in our busy daily lives we can sometimes neglect our own medical problems.

The concept of family medicine includes an awareness of the social & psychological background of the family, and maintaining excellent communication when illness or injury affects a family member. We are mindful of the differing health needs as a person moves from childhood, to adolescence, to adult life and then to the latter years of their life.

We are also very aware of, and cater to the needs of men’s health, and are sensitive and professional when it comes to sensitive procedures such as prostate checks. We understand that such subjects are not openly talked about, so act most ethically as possible when it comes to confidentiality. See Men’s Health for more information.

At Glover Street Surgery, you can be reassured of your family’s health because we offer a variety of services under the same roof, catering to the whole family regarding of their age, level of health or medical condition.

In November 1999 the Federal Government initiated a yearly “health care assessment” consultation available through Medicare. This is to support motivated GP’s to provide health assessments for their patients. All Australians aged 75 and over and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders aged 55 and over are eligible. We bulk bill everyone, pensioner or not for the service.

Annual, voluntary health assessments for older Australians provide an opportunity for your doctor at

Glover Street Surgery to undertake an in-depth assessment of your health. Health assessments cover the patient’s medical, physical, psychological and social function.

What does this health assessment mean to you?

It provides an opportunity for your doctor to take a thorough look at some of the health problems that you may encounter. It is designed to support preventive measures to improve your quality of life.

Some of the issues addressed will include:

  • - Daily activities and how well you can do these
  • - Your nutritional status
  • - Risk of falls and injury i.e. review of home safety
  • - Mood & risk of depression
  • - Memory capacity
  • - Vision & hearing levels
  • - Social interaction and support
  • - Risk of heart attack, stroke & diabetes
  • - Bladder & bowel function
  • - Smoking & alcohol intake
  • - Immunisation status
  • - Medications; both prescribed and over the counter

Overall a health assessment is a very valuable activity to enable a comprehensive appraisal of all your health needs and discover any medical problems as well as ask a health professional any relevant questions that relate to your health. The service is fully bulk-billed and is conducted in your home or in clinic. Call our reception team to make an appointment and one of our friendly nurses will organise your annual health assessment to get a realistic idea of your medical situation.

Two out of three Australians will develop skin cancer. Australians have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.

Have you had your skin checked recently for skin cancer and Melanoma? Please organise a appointment to see our doctor.

Skin cancer is an almost totally preventable form of cancer; 95 per cent of skin cancers are treatable if they are detected early. Regular checks of your skin should detect any suspicious moles or spots as soon as they develop.

Melanoma is a disease of the skin in which cancer cells are found in the cells that colour the skin. While this cancer is usually found in adults, it is occasionally found in younger people. If a mole or pigmented area doesn’t look normal, your doctor at Glover Street Surgery will cut it out (called local excision) and look at it under the microscope to see if it contains cancer. The screening is done in our clinic and is a relatively quick procedure. It is important that this biopsy is done correctly; as early detection means that your doctor can treat or refer sooner.

You should see your doctor if you have any of the following warning signs of melanoma: change in the size, shape, or colour of a mole; oozing or bleeding from a mole; or a mole that feels itchy, hard, lumpy, swollen, or tender to the touch. Melanoma can also appear on the body as a new mole. Men most often get melanoma on the trunk (the area of the body between the shoulders and hips) or on the head or neck; women most often get melanoma on the arms and legs.

Screening the body for melanoma can potentially lead to earlier diagnosis, thinner tumours and less chance of death from the cancer. If you want to have your skin checked, the doctor’s at Glover Street Surgery are the best people to see as they will know your full history and can provide follow up care. If you have been treated for skin cancer it is a good idea to have your skin checked by your doctor on a regular basis.
